CDEC - Education

SCHOLARSHIPS

Continental Divide is fortunate to have one of the state's largest cooperative-sponsored scholarship programs, thanks to the mining boom in the 1970s and 80s.

Each year, Continental Divide awards numerous scholarships to traditional and non-traditional college students who choose to attend school in New Mexico. Grants of up to $2,000 are awarded.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be active members of the co-op or immediate family of co-op members.

An active member is someone who currently receives Continental Divide electric service.

Recipients must use the scholarship money to pursue an established bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in New Mexico . Students must carry and successfully complete at least 12 credit hours (full-time), per semester.

How do I apply?

Applications are made available annually beginning in February. Completed applications are due back to the co-op on May 1 of each year.

What's the application process?

Applicants also need to present a copy of their transcript and three letters of recommendation from the high school(s) they attended, stating why the applicant is college material and needs financial assistance.

If the applicant has received the equivalent of a high school degree, such as a G.E.D., or has been out of school for many years, then letters may be obtained from the last high school or elementary school attended.

How are recipients chosen?

Scholarship recipients are chosen by the CDEC Education Foundation's Scholarship Committee. The committee bases its decisions on the academic accomplishments and character of recipients.

How much is the scholarship and how long can I receive it?

Grants of up to $2,000 are awarded each year. The number of grants and amount depend on funds available in the co-op's Education Foundation.

If an applicant is chosen to receive the full $2,000, then $1,000 will be awarded in the fall semester.

The maximum amount a student can receive from CDEC's Education Foundation is $8,000 for four years. Recipients are required to maintain a 2.5 G.P.A. in order for the scholarship to be renewed beyond the first semester.
