2008 YOUTH TOUR WINNERS

High school juniors Tannin Cash of Grants and Kyrie Ivanovich of Ramah have been selected to represent Continental Divide Electric Cooperative at this year’s Government-In-Action Youth Tour in Wash., D.C.

Cash (Grants High School) and Ivanovich (Ramah High School) were among six juniors who competed for the once-in-a-lifetime, expense-paid experience.

Cash and Ivanovich will meet up with some 1,500 students chosen from across the country by other electric co-ops to tour our nation’s capital and the many historical treasures in Washington during the week of June 14-20.

“Continental Divide is very proud of this program. It’s a great opportunity for youth to see how our government works,” CDEC General Manager Dick Shirley said.

Continental Divide required its Youth Tour applicants to take a multiple-choice quiz, based on study materials about the importance of cooperatives and the history of American rural electrification. The materials were supplied by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The readings explained the history of the electric co-op movement and the principles under which co-ops operate.

Cash’s scored highest, followed by Ivanovich. Rebecca Spitz, a Rehobeth Christian High School junior, was chosen as an alternate, in the event that either Cash or Ivanovich is unable to attend the Youth Tour. The contest’s other participants were Sahar Saidi (Grants High School), Jeremy Laselute (Ramah High School) and Courtney
Etcitty
(Crownpoint High School).

The annual Government-in-Action contest is open to high school juniors whose parents or legal guardians are members of Continental Divide Electric Co-op. In January, contest entries are sent to each high school in the co-op’s service area. Winners are selected in February.
